Half Term Message from Miss Elliott

October Half Term 2021

Message from Miss Elliott

Looking back over this half term we are thankful for all the lovely things that have taken place in school. It has been a rather challenging half term; with the rise of COVID positive cases and the need to step up our COVID measure, but even with all that – we are so happy to be back together as our school community.

 New Reception Families

A very warm welcome to our new Reception children and their families, to the family of English Martyrs’. Reception children have had a fantastic start to the school year.  They have been busy trying different activities including singing, counting, painting, building and exploring our outdoor play area, as well as making lots of new friends!

 Moving back to ‘normality’!

We began this year gradually moving towards a more ‘normal’ school life.

 Gathering together

We have met together in our Key stages (Key Stage 1 and 2) each Monday for Worship and Friday for singing.

Our staff began to gather together for prayers, briefing and staff training.

Year 4 went on a trip to the Discovery Museum.

During the visit the children were able to handle some World War II equipment, including ration book and gas masks.  The archive department provided a special workshop where they could use a ration book to shop as people would have done during the war.  We all had a very enjoyable and informative visit.

 English Martyrs’ School Football Team

We had trials for our school football and the team was selected by Mr Kennedy and Miss Murray. They have played a few games and are performing well.

 Traffic & Parking concerns

Year 6 have been working very closely with our Community Police to try and address our concerns and help improve the situation.

 Trialling new resources

Both staff and pupils have been involved in elements of action research this term.

Our EYFS team have been researching the best resources available to record our children’s learning journey, as well as enhancing parental engagement and communication.

Years 1, 4, 5 and 6 have been trialling a new resource – Now Press Play – which is an immersive audio resource engaging child in the curriculum through sound, story and movement.

Finally, Year 4 and 5 have been trialling a new online resource – SUMDOG which makes learning fun with online maths, spelling and grammar games to reinforce key maths and literacy skills.

If your child is in one of these year groups you might want to ask them all about it!

The staff and children must have enjoyed them as the Leadership Team have asked school to buy each of the resources!!

Sadly, due to this rise in cases in school – we had to step up our COVID control measures, and end the term without being able to gather together and some classes being back in their bubbles.

We have been so pleased to be able to reintroduce our Year 6 Responsibility Role this term.

Our Year 6 children have made a fantastic start to life in Year 6 and were all awarded Lunchtime Prefect badges. Please visit ‘Life in Year 6’ page to be introduced to our newly appointed post holders.

Looking forward ….

We are optimistic that we can begin the next half term by stepping down our current COVID control measure and have planned the term with that in mind, but with some cautiousness.

 Please help the Poppy Appeal

We will have poppies and poppy related items on sale in school when we return after October half-term holiday in support of The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

 Parents meetings

We had hoped to invite you into school for a curriculum night with your child’s class teacher, but we feel that would not be prudent, so we will carry out Parent Meetings via phone again this year. More information will follow after half term.

 Christmas Events

The children will, as always, experience the joy and excitement of Christmas in school, but we are reviewing our Risk Assessment in relation to parents coming into school to watch performances etc. As a school we will make the Reception Nativity Performance our priority if we can welcome families into school.

We will be looking at the possibility of each Phase joining together for a Carol Service to be held in church.
