Whist in Year 1 the children will take the DfE Year 1 Phonic screening check.
The Year 1 phonics screening check, is not a formal test, but a way for teachers to ensure that children are making sufficient progress with their phonics skills to read words and that they are on track to become fluent readers who can enjoy reading for pleasure and for learning.
Our Year 1 children will take the phonics screening check in early June along with all Year 1 children in England
What is in the phonics screening check?
There are two sections in this 40-word check and it assesses phonics skills and knowledge learned through Reception and Year 1. Your child will read up to four words per page for their teacher and they will probably do the check in one sitting of about 5–10 minutes.
Parents & Child Phonics session
We would like to invite you into school to find out more about phonics and how you can support your child at home.
We will be holding 2 sessions one on Tuesday 1st March and another on Thursday 3rd March at 2pm. You will be sent a link for you to book either one of these sessions. It is hoped that your child will be able to join you for this session.
The session will be both informative and practical and give you an opportunity to see phonics in action.
