Meet new people, sing together, have fun!

National Youth Choirs of Great Britain is delighted to invite young singers from across the North East to take part in an exciting weekend of activity kindly supported by the Gillian Dickinson Trust:

This intensive weekend of activity aims to encourage talented young singers in the region to progress with their singing and to support young singers who have missed out on opportunities. The Young Singers Intensive will be preceded by 2 online workshop sessions with Luke Mather who will be leading the weekend to start to get to know the young singers and to introduce prepare them for the activity.

This is a regional opportunity from National Youth Choirs with the support of all the North East Music Education Hubs aimed just at young singers in the North East. We look forward to welcoming young people from Durham & Darlington, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside, Sunderland and Tees Valley.

Who can take part?

  • Young people in Y6 - Y9 who are passionate about singing.
  • We are looking to hear from all voice types, whether upper or developing lower voices. NYCGB has significant experience working with boys going through vocal change.
  • Singers should be keen to learn and work together as an ensemble.
  • This programme is aimed at those who have missed out on opportunities for group singing and those young singers who need encouragement to develop their skills.
  • Open to all musical backgrounds. The styles and genres we explore will be varied and engaging. An understanding of music reading is not expected, although we will be introducing score reading to the group with the aim of making young singers feel more confident with notation.
  • The programme is free for all participants and lunch and refreshments will be provided. There is also support available to help pay for travel costs for those who otherwise would not be able to take part.

What will it involve?

Online workshops (dates tbc)

  • To engage with singers & for them to get to know NYCGB leaders taking part.
  • A series of stepping stones towards the weekend activity that will build up some skills, including musicianship, and introduce some of the songs we will be working on.

Young Singers Intensive at Sunderland City Hall

  • Young singers take part in an intensive two days of high-quality ensemble singing workshops led by NYCGB staff and supported by volunteers from the National Youth Choir (aged 18-25).
  • Build on repertoire introduced in the online activity, as well as NYCGB’s approach to musicianship.
  • An enjoyable and social experience for young people.
  • Aiming to help young singers develop confidence in their own abilities and encourage them to take the next step in their musical development.
  • Finishing with an informal sharing for friends and families to celebrate what they have been working on.

What do young singers think?

‘I enjoyed singing and making new friends who love to sing too.’

‘The musicianship workshop about sight reading and scales was really helpful.’

‘I will definitely continue singing, and I’m now learning to play some of the songs we learned at home. I am trying hard to read music too.’

‘Learning to sing new types of music and understanding more about my own voice!’
